One of the most common questions I hear from seniors is: “What if it’s cloudy during my session?” But here’s the truth: cloudy skies might actually be your hidden gem. And today, I’m sharing exactly why you don’t need to stress when the sun hides.

During the busy spring and summer seasons, cloudy days are inevitable. We don’t typically reschedule because the sun’s not out (unless rain is expected in the forecast or the senior has specifically requested a golden hour look). Cloudy skies can offer the perfect soft lighting for timeless, natural images. Take this TCU senior session, for example. We were met with a full layer of clouds, but the results? Absolutely stunning!

More Flexibility with Locations

On sunny days, I often time-out our photos around where the light hits. But with cloud coverage, we can shoot almost anywhere at any time. Campus hotspots become dreamy, soft-lit backdrops. Fewer crowds, more freedom, and all-around versatility!

Soft, Flattering Light

Cloud cover acts like a natural diffuser, softening the sunlight. This means you’ll get even, glowing light in every shot. No squinting and no blown-out highlights.

Trust the Photographer

This senior was truly the sweetest! She came ready to have fun, trusted me completely, and didn’t let the cloudy weather faze her one bit. Her personality shone through every image, from her fun pink scrubs to the sweet moments with her mom. As a professional photographer, I am trained to work with all types of lighting, and cloudy days are no exception. Together, we worked with the soft tones the clouds gave us, and the results were absolutely beautiful!

At the end of the day, portrait sessions are about you, not the weather. And when your photographer knows how to work with light and conditions (yes, even on overcast days!), the focus stays exactly where it should. With the right approach, settings, and editing, you’d never even know the sun wasn’t shining.
